The Charles Village Recreation League (CVRL) is an all-volunteer organization whose purpose is to provide recreational sports for school-aged children and youth in Baltimore in an environment that emphasizes fun, skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.
CVRL was founded in 1993 by a group of Charles Village parents who wanted their children to have recreational opportunities commonly found in the suburbs without having to leave the city.. It started with 20 Charles Village kids and has now grown to 400+ kids from throughout Baltimore.
The League focuses on recreation for children 4-14 years old and currently offers clinic and travel soccer in both fall and spring and a small basketball program in the winter.
Over the years CVRL has grown and expanded its geographic reach beyond Charles Village to serve a broad community of Baltimore City children and their families. Yet the philosophy of the league has not changed. CVRL still focuses on offering city kids the opportunity to learn a new sport and gain confidence through skill building, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and fun.
All activities are designed, organized, and coached by volunteers, mostly parents of the children participating.
These activities are provided at reasonable rates to ensure the widest possible access to the league.
To keep costs low, CVRL depends on volunteers and on cooperative relationships with the City of Baltimore, the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, the Bard School, Corpus Christi Church, and other community organizations.
Travel teams play in the Archdiocese of Baltimore Soccer Program, the Central Maryland Soccer Association, Premier Futsal League, Vettori & Keith Van Eron Leagues. Our home fields are in Druid Hill Park.
The success of CVRL programs depends on volunteers. All are encouraged to help. Tasks include coaching, assistant coaching, developing new activities, organizing snacks and refreshments, administrative tasks such as website and database management, and generally helping out by pitching in.
